Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located 70 kilometers (43 mi) west of Mount Kilimanjaro. At 4,562 meters (14,968 feet), it is Africa’s fifth highest mountain. The trek takes you through Arusha National Park’s beautiful landscapes, filled with lush forests, savannah, and a rich variety of wildlife.

Tour Plan

Start Point: Momella Gate (1,500 m)

  • Highlights: Begin your trek in the late morning, passing through open grasslands where you'll spot buffalo, warthogs, and elephants. The trail then leads into the montane forest where you can enjoy bird watching, with the chance of seeing black and white colobus monkeys.
  • Lunch: Famous Fig Tree, where you can relax and enjoy your meal.
  • End Point: Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m) – Enjoy panoramic views of the plains towards Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • Ascent: 1,014 m
  • Walking Time: 4-6 hours

  • Start Point: Miriakamba Hut
  • Highlights: The trek continues with a steep climb through montane forests and heather moorlands, reaching Saddle Hut (3,570 m). You can enjoy a relaxing afternoon and, for the energetic, a short climb to Little Meru (3,820 m) for stunning views before sunset.
  • Ascent: 1,056 m
  • Walking Time: 3-5 hours
  • Saddle Hut: Similar to Miriakamba but with water collected from a nearby stream. The ridge offers views of Kenya and the Maasai Hills.

  • Start Point: Rhino Point (3,800 m)
  • Highlights: An early start around 2:00 am to summit Mount Meru. Trek to Cobra Point (4,350 m) for amazing views of the crater, the Ash Cone, and Mount Kilimanjaro. The path to the summit of Socialist Peak (4,566 m) is a challenging but rewarding final stretch.
  • Descent: Return to Rhino Point, then descend rapidly through the grasslands and forests back to Momella Gate.
  • Ascent: 766 m
  • Walking Time: 2-3 hours
